Overhead Sacristy: Fortnight for Freedom Begins

  1. Religious liberty, as natural as it seems to us westerners today, is an alien concept to many cultures and won't be easily accepted by them. Even in Europe such liberty is a very new phenomenon: just over 200 years ago, becoming a Catholic was a capital crime in Sweden, now such a liberal place. In Victorian times, European women had about as much liberty as Saudi Arabian women today. Religious and moral coercion is a powerful and tempting tool for every authoritarian government.

In a few short years, Christians will be persecuted as potential terrorists not just in Muslim, pagan, and atheist countries, but by their own elected authorities in democratic places like Europe. Will Catholics be among those persecuted, or will they watch it happening, thinking themselves lucky not to be involved? The thought of not being targeted should be a sobering wake-up call for every Christian, because it would also mean not being part of God's kingdom.

What needs to happen within the Church between now and then? Read my free (pseudonymous) e-book Walkabout: The Story of a Brief Century to find out.

    Blessings,

    Robert
