Slated to be greeted on the tarmac by President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and their wives – a rare honor for an arriving leader – no public events are scheduled following Francis' landing, with the pontiff set to be taken straight to the Nunciature on Massachusetts Avenue in a Fiat sedan.
Once the traveling press pool arrives at the media hotel in the capital, a briefing will be held by the Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi, who hinted last week that the flight from Cuba could see an initial on-board "conversation" between the Pope and press pack.
Of course, the public events for the three-city visit begin tomorrow, when the president welcomes Francis to the White House before an estimated crowd of 15,000, after which the duo will meet privately in the Oval Office.
